Because Woody is chivalrous and Bonnie is very upset about it. Also because Woody has to do something. He actually says that in the film, which I think basically underscores the weakness of the plot and its very obvious fabrication. But the question also arises as to what constitutes a toy. My brother and I used to play with sock puppets and pieces of cloth tied together because we didn’t have many toys. Did those loosely attached socks and scraps of cloth count as toys?
